The following series of operations are those most often required to improve the performance of a generally poor-running engine:
Primary operations
- Clean, inspect and test the battery
- Check all the engine-related fluids
- Check the condition and tension of the auxiliary drivebelt
- Renew the spark plugs
- Inspect the ignition system components
- Inspect the ignition HT leads
- Check the condition of the air filter, and renew if necessary
- Check the condition of all hoses, and check for fluid leaks.
If the above operations do not prove fully effective, carry out the following secondary operations:
Secondary operations
All items listed under "Primary operations", plus the following:
- Check the charging system
- Check the fuel system
- Renew the air filter
- Renew the distributor cap and rotor arm
- Renew the ignition HT leads.
Every 250 miles or weekly
- Fluid level checks
- Battery check
- Tyre checks
